2011-2012: Lucius Cary
Lucius is the founder and managing director of Oxford Technology Management (OTM), which has specialised in making and managing investment in start-ups and early –stage technology – based businesses since 1983. OTM manages funds totalling £53 million, including the Oxford Technology Enterprise Capital Fund and the Oxford Technology 1,2,3&4 Venture Capital Trust (VCTs), and has invested in more than 100 embryonic companies to date.
After studying engineering and economics at the University of Oxford and doing an MBA at Harvard, Cary set up his first business – a chain of hamburger restaurants. The difficulties he encountered raising finance inspired him to found his second business, Venture Capital Report (VCR), a publication designed to bring new ventures to the attention of potential investors. While running VCR, Cary witnessed the difficulties encountered by scientists and engineers trying to raise money for technology start ups, and this in turn led to the formation of his third company, Seed Capital, and to the establishment of the first of nine investment funds that he has set up and managed over the past 25 years.
In 2003 Cary was awarded an OBE for services to businesses and in 2004 he received the Judge Award at investors Allstars for his ongoing contribution to early –stage investing.
