 Oxford at Saïd Seminar: Migration

The mobility of people is now firmly recognised as a key factor in shaping society today, but the relationship between migration and societal change is only partly understood. The migration process is driven by social, economic, political and other forces and evolves in complex interaction with political decision-making, networks, brokers and infrastructures. It has also been acknowledged that the notion of migration includes integration or exclusion on all levels of society, the labour market, the impact on those left in the homeland, and other issues that arise from the experiences en route and on arrival.

This Oxford at Saïd seminar featured talks by Hein de Haas from the International Migration Intitute and Carlos Vargas-Silva from the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society. Hein de Haas presented latest trends in global migration and the myths and facts associated with it and Carlos Vargs-Silva contributed findings which help to disentangle the complex ecomomics of migrant labour.
