 Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School!

As a newcomer to Saïd Business School and to Oxford, I have spent the last few months meeting with my new colleagues: faculty, staff, students, and alumni.  I've been reviewing the research of the faculty, our educational programmes, and our outreach to the business world.  I discovered that Saïd Business School is a remarkable and vibrant community, uniquely positioned among business schools by virtue of being deeply embedded in Oxford. If you look across the School, you will find researchers working on some of the most vexing problems facing business, students interacting in lively classrooms, and an academic community reaching out to embrace the world.

On the research front, while we are known for particular strengths in finance and in entrepreneurship, you will find Saïd Business School researchers studying elements as specific as corporate taxation and as broad as corporate reputation and strategy setting.  You will find researchers engaged in sectors as diverse as health care, retail, professional services, hi-tech start-ups, consumer finance, and non-profit enterprises.  Our researchers study traditional corporations, micro-enterprises and huge infrastructure projects.   And they frequently study in the field, whether that means the City of London, Silicon Valley – or India, China, and Africa. Whatever the context – even when we are working with governments – it is our understanding of business that is at the heart of what we do.

Our global student body, drawn from over 50 countries, includes exceptional undergraduates being introduced to management, MBA students preparing for a lifetime of business challenges, and seasoned executives looking to SBS for the latest thinking in topics as varied as managing mega-projects or charting a course for their own careers.

Far from being a cloistered community, we reach out to and embrace the broader world in events ranging from the Skoll World Forum - the premier global gathering of social entrepreneurs, to  Silicon Valley Comes to Oxford - which brings the world’s top innovators to the UK. Saïd Business School hosts leading speakers from around the globe. You'll find our faculty advising top businesses and policymakers, and our students venturing all over the globe.  And you'll find our alumni both in the world’s great corporations and in social ventures in some of the poorest parts of the world.

Saïd Business School not only bears an Oxford name, but our community is intertwined with the broader University.  Rather than live in a "business bubble," our students and faculty are members of Oxford’s colleges and interact with counterparts across the University. This engagement takes place over meals and sports fields, in research collaborations such as the Oxford-Man Institute for Quantitative Finance, and in our classrooms, for example in our pioneering Masters in Law and Finance Programme.

Saïd Business School : the benefits of new and old. A 15-year old school in an 800-year old Universty. A place where we study the rules of the game, and then figure out how to change the game altogether.  My new Saïd Business School  community seeks no less than to grapple with the tremendous problems and opportunities facing business, and through them the societies which business exists to serve.  I am honored and privileged to join this fine community.  I hope you'll learn more about us- or even join our remarkable community!

Cheers,

Peter Tufano
